The Danger Of Sitting

PANA7319 scaled 1

Sitting on your butt literally makes your butt bigger.

When a group of researchers studied MRI images of muscle tissue, they found that sitting around for long periods of time could put pressure on cells and cause the body to produce 50% more fat than it usually would. FIFTY PERCENT!

This research suggests that when force is placed on a specific are in the body for an extended time, it causes fat tissue to expand. So even if you exercise regularly, sitting for many hours encourages fat cells to congregate near your rear.

When there’s no other choice but to be on your butt for several hours a day, do your best to break it up. If you sit for hours on end, your blood sugar and insulin levels will spike to dangerous levels. However, taking a regular break can counterbalance these spikes. Even just two minutes of an easy stroll every 20 minutes can be enough to stabilize blood sugar levels.

If getting up and moving around regularly isn’t natural for you, trick yourself into being active. Do something to remind yourself to get up at least two or three times per hour. On way to force movement is to drink more water! This should help you get up more often to refill or take restroom breaks.

But there are more dangers associated with sitting.

To quote Dr. James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.”

Typically, the seated worker (think prison guard, refinery operator, office worker, or any other job where you’ll spend time on your rear) has more musculoskeletal injuries than workers in any other industry. Think about that for a minute. We’re comparing the injury rates of office workers to constructions workers, the metal industry, and transportation workers.

Here’s another stat for you..

Every hour of television watched after age 25 reduces the viewer’s life expectancy by 21.8 minutes. Compare this to the 11 minutes of life expectancy reduction by smoking a single cigarette. 😮

The moral of todays story is this..

Some of the best jobs in Crawford County are the type of job where people to spend A LOT of time on their bottom. Even though those jobs are great for your bank account, they’re not great for for your health. It’s time to do something about it.

Get off your butt and move around more if you want to continue to lose weight, stay healthy, and live a long and happy life.
