Athlete Story: Kerrie

It was close to the new year in 2017 when my mom and I were sitting around talking about how we wanted to do something to change our habits and get healthy again which we hadn’t done in a very long time.  Someone had spoken to my mom about Final Call, a new gym in town that was getting ready to start another foundations course at the first of the year so we got online signed up for the course and started our journey on January 8th, 2018.

My first impression was positive but didn’t know how my body was going to react to the trauma I was putting it through from being out of shape for so long. I didn’t realize how much I hadn’t been moving until I tried doing basic movements that shouldn’t be a problem which were a big problem. Matt was great at making sure we were moving correctly especially in the beginning not having a clue what we were capable of but also having the knowledge of how we could hurt ourselves if we didn’t listen to our bodies.

I now know exactly what movements are good for me, which ones I need to work on and ones that I just need to stay away from.

My very first bright spot was when I realized that my body had changed!  My nutrition was on point, I had lost 30 lbs. and was stronger than I had been in 20 yrs.  As a woman in my mid 40’s, this is huge and very hard to achieve after a certain age.  To be specific, I remember the first day I decided to wear a tank top in the gym instead of a baggy t-shirt and more than one person approached me to tell me that I should wear them more often.  Apparently other people were seeing the changes in my body more than I was and when I decided to show more skin per say, it was noticeable.

Now I am working on my strength!  I had low-back surgery in October of 2018 due to many years of sports growing up and built up damage that was being aggravated. After 2 months of recovery I was back at the gym slowly building my strength up again.  Today I am working on maintaining my weight but building more muscle.

If I could go back a year ago I would tell myself “ I knew you could do it!”  I was very discouraged after my surgery thinking I had done all of this work to get where I was and was very afraid of losing it all and not being able to go back to the gym. I continued to fight and never gave up on my goals.  Starting this journey with Final Call was the best decision I ever made for myself and is not just a temporary fix but a lifestyle change to be a happier, healthier, and much stronger person physically and mentally!
